One of the most common excuses for not undergoing ECG is the non-availability of time for going to the lab. Now, with a portable ECG machine, this excuse may not hold good. Portable out-of-the-lab ECG machine has the potential to transform cardiac health, especially in the corporate wellness setting. ECG taken with this machine is as simple as measuring blood pressure.
We were under the myth that ECG will take a very long, but with Ayush’s professional medical team. The average time taken is less than 5 minutes.-HR Manager, Ramee Hotels
HEART HEALTH IN CORPORATE WELLNESS PROGRAM
The multitude effects of successful corporate wellness programs are not limited to the workplace, rather their influence is registered beyond the worksite campus. First, the immediate family members of the employees get benefited as they have to share the financial burden. Second, corporate wellness program helps improve the overall health of the nation.
With the rapid pace of growth coupled with a highly competitive environment, stress and lifestyle diseases have deep penetration in employees’ life. The rest is done by the exponential growth in prices of medications and treatment. It is obvious why employees at a younger age have diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases especially hypertension and stroke.
The disease does not come of a sudden. Not even the sudden cardiac arrest. The diseases such as diabetes, cardiac arrest, dyslipidemia, and stroke provide numerous signs before pressing the full throttle. But, as usual, we are gripped by our thought process of rehabilitation and restoration rather than prevention and promotion of health.
DO ALTERED ECG ONLY INDICATES RISK OF HEART ATTACK?
An electrocardiogram is usually done to evaluate the condition of the heart. However, it is interesting to note that abnormal ECG may also indicate problems other than the heart. Timely management of such problems prevents them to transform to more complex conditions. The diseases which may cause altered ECG includes:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Abnormal ECG may be due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Alteration in ECG can be caused due to the compensatory mechanism of heart against low oxygen level caused due to a respiratory disorder.
Lyme Disease: Lyme disease is an infectious disease spread by ticks. It has been estimated that almost 8-10% of Lyme disease have cardiac involvement. The patient experiences symptoms such as palpitations, light-headedness, and syncope.
Heart Concussion: Altered ECG can be due to injury of chest, ribs or sternum. The patient does not have any medical history of any cardiac disease.
Taking high doses of antidepressant: The competition is so fierce in the business world that most professionals have to take medicines to overcome anxiety and depression. High doses of these drugs lead to abnormal ECG.
Hypothermia: Hypothermia is the condition of low body temperature. Hypothermia may influence the readings of ECG.
STRESS AND ALTERED ECG
Stress is either Eustress and Distress. While eustress is required in the business environment because it infuses energy, motivation, and passion to face challenges, the distress takes a toll on an individual’s health. When the stress reaches a threshold, it drains energy and creates a sense of worry. Substantial evidence is available to indicate the effect of stress on the functioning of the heart via the nervous system. Acute mental stress results in an alteration in the electrical activity of the heart which can be recorded through ECG.
